Juliana and Laura, from Something Collective, have been invited to create a text and art installation at the South HIll Library, engaging Sunset neighbors in the process. \u00a0This project, entitled\u00a0Alphabet Stories,<\/em>\u00a0was launched last week. \u00a0<\/em>Here is the invitation we distributed to the community:<\/p>\n

1. \u00a0Discover the history of the alphabets which represent the languages of your neighborhood, and learn to draw these ancient symbols.<\/p>\n

2. \u00a0Write the stories that you imagine might have inspired the shapes of these alphabet letters.<\/p>\n

3. \u00a0Play with words using alliteration (words or phrases that start with the same letter), palindromes (words that read the same backwards and forwards) and ambigrams words that read the same upside down and right side up).<\/p>\n

4. Create concrete poems inspired by certain letters. (See attached example below)<\/p>\n

5. See the results of this story and image-making as we dress up your library wall with digital versions of your text and drawings, made into vinyl stickers.<\/p>\n

Last Friday, we worked with ESL students from the library, and the results of our first session are amazing! \u00a0 Each student worked with the first letter of their first name.\u00a0 Together we created an abecedary,\u00a0<\/em>or an\u00a0alphabetized list, (think of the road trip game: “I’m throwing a dinner party and I’m going to bring…”:) of their favorite foods, using their assigned letter. \u00a0Then, each participant rewrote their word in their own alphabet. \u00a0A beautiful array of artistic alphabets were represented in the room: Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Punjabi, Roman, and Cyrillic. \u00a0And some hand-drawn images of our work together are below. \u00a0The second photo also captures the remarkable beauty of the symbology behind the Chinese character for Listen<\/em>. \u00a0The gestures within the character for this word represent a combination of words including: Undivided, attention, eyes, ears, heart, king\/queen<\/em>. \u00a0This was described as meaning “When one listens in this complete way they treat the person they are listening to like royalty.” \u00a0What a wonderful intention for all of us to follow.<\/div>\n

Another component of our workshop asked participants to create poems that described their letter using words that began with the letter itself. \u00a0Some examples of their incredibly clever alliteration are below:<\/p>\n

A sometimes looks amazing,
\n<\/em>Always awesome ABCD.
\n<\/em>It ate an avocado in the afternoon
\n<\/em>and an apple pie again after that.<\/em><\/p>\n

<\/em>S slithers slowly,
\n<\/em>snakelike on the street,
\n<\/em>skin shimmering in the sun.<\/em><\/p>\n

P represents people.
\n<\/em>People are us.
\n<\/em>We have different personalities.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/em>R ran away more
\n<\/em>rapidly than a rabbit,
\n<\/em>before the sun set
\n<\/em>away beyond the sea.<\/em><\/p>\n

Ted is a funny boy,
\n<\/em>Turning left and turning right,
\n<\/em>telling silly stories all the time.<\/em><\/p>\n

Y usually looks like a branch,
\n<\/em>growing widely underground,
\n<\/em>and strong, like arms,
